What is the Labor Studies Center? It is a comprehensive labor and employment educational extension center that is dedicated to improving the lives of working people while contributing to an organization’s economic success. The Center conducts innovative labor and employment workshops and programs tailored to assist in the development of high quality jobs and improve the social and economic condition of workers and their communities. What is Labor School? The “Labor School” is the Labor Studies premier leadership development program. The Labor School at Wayne State University is a multidisciplinary leadership development certificate program for workers, union leaders, and community activists. The program’s curriculum focuses on providing information to working people about issues that impact their lives, workplaces and communities. The Labor Leadership Development Certificate Program consists of 10 non-credit, 5-week, labor relations and liberal arts courses that may be taken on the main Wayne State University campus or online. The Labor Leadership Development School (Labor School) has been educating union leaders, activists and the community for over 50 years. Upon completion of the required 10 courses, students will receive a certificate from the Labor Studies Center and are invited to participate in a graduation ceremony. Each course is $200. Labor School courses are approved through UAW-GM tuition assistance programs. Labor School Courses are 5-weeks in length. The Fall Semester includes: U.S. Labor History, Basic Grievance Handling, State of Labor and Your Rights in the Workplace. The Winter Semester includes: Economics for the Workers, Collective Bargaining, Power and Politics, Effective Leadership, Leading a Diverse Organization and Building the Union. These online courses are convenient for busy adults. Courses are facilitated by instructors and include interactive course assignments and discussion boards.
